According to the Science Club for Girls, “Women make up less than 29 percent of the science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) workforce.” In this session, participants will learn about Lise Meitner, Rosalind Franklin, Patricia Bath, and Jocelyn Bell Burnell—four women who challenged this statistic, ultimately becoming pioneers in the sciences. These women are the subjects of Francine Trester’s (College Composition) “In Her Element,” an orchestral work that will be premiered by the Kendall Square Orchestra on March 8, 2024–International Women’s Day. K2O conductor Kristo Kondakçi (College Composition) and soloists Carrie Cheron (College Voice) and Erin Merceruio Nelson will be on hand to discuss the project, as well as their involvement in bringing new music to life in the context of social advocacy. Faculty Alicia Bower (Liberal Arts and Sciences), as well as presenters from outside of Berklee, will also offer their perspectives on the intersection of science and music, and the role of gender in both.
